The European Union’s Migration Pact and border protection in questions and answers
Since 2021, Poland's border with Belarus—the EU's eastern frontier—has faced unprecedented migrant pressure orchestrated by Belarusian and Russian authorities as a "weapon of mass migration" to destabilize targeted countries. Modern international law lacks effective tools to counter this abuse of refugee protection obligations.
The EU's Migration Pact—ten legislative pieces—fails to address border security. Instead, it assumes mass migration's inevitability and positive impact, focusing on efficient legalization and distributing the burden of hosting millions of illegal immigrants through a "solidarity mechanism". This approach won't resolve crises at EU's external borders.
This report examines the Migration Pact's regulations and their implications for member states, while advocating for reforms to prevent international refugee obligations from being weaponized for destabilization.
